Toy Dolls: Our Last DVD? (2004) (693mb = 76 min.)

England’s THE TOY DOLLS are a wonderfully fun and talented band that unfortunately has been treated relatively like a novelty in the US. The band’s level of talent and cleverness are things that in general betray the label of “punk rock” and tracks like “Nellie the Elephant”, “Dig that Groove Baby”, “She Goes to Finos” and “I’ve Got Asthma” are classics that one can never get tired of. After two and half decades the band considers calling it quits, although they are far from “dried up has beens” and it would be a shame for them to cut short their continually growing legacy of consistently entertaining music.

This DVD release features excellent audio and video quality as 27 tracks are performed in Utrecht Tivoli, Holland. It’s an absolutely solid and enjoyable show that highlights the band’s humor and talent as they barrel through each track with the hyperactive energy of a young kid hopped up on sugar. Ever the showmen, the band breaks into several interesting cover song choices that seem completely out of place in their chosen genre yet pulled off spectacularly. Watching the band bust out “The Entertainer”, “Wipe out”, “When the Saints go Marching in”, or “Toccata” bring a smile to one’s face and prove there is much more to this band than it may seem on the surface.

Sex Pistols - Live Tokyo Japan 15.11.1996. (664mb = 67 min.)

The Sex Pistols were an iconic and highly influential English punk band, formed in London in 1975. The band originally comprised vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock (later replaced by Sid Vicious). Although their initial career lasted only three years and produced only four singles and one studio album, the Sex Pistols have been described by the BBC as "the definitive English punk rock band." The Pistols are widely credited with initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom and creating the first generation gap within rock and roll.

Beatsteaks - Rock Am Ring 2004 (476mb = 30 min.)

The Beatsteaks formed in 1995 in their native Germany, playing local shows at food festivals and by the end of that summer, the punk-popsters were recording a demo Beatsteaks - die Erste which went on to sell more than 1000 copies. Still only in high school during this time, the Beatsteaks steared straight for their musical dreams, constantly participating in area competitions and talent shows. In 1996, the band won a competition that led them to open for the Sex Pistols in Berlin, marking the band's tenth show. The latter '90s were also spent recording and touring; in 1997 48/49 was released and a spring tour followed as well as support dates with Lagwagon, the Bloodhound Gang, Dog Eag Dog, and Faith No More. By 1999, the band inked a deal with Epitaph and recorded their major-label debut Launch with Uwe Sabirowski (Mad Sin, Thumb). The following year found them on the road, but by the end of 2001 they had settled down and were ready to step back into the studio. The results, 2002's Living Targets, were more melodic and aggressive than previous releases.

Discharge - Victoria Hall Hanley Stoke 11.03.1983. (742mb = 47 min.)

Discharge was formed in Stoke-on-Trent in 1977 by two brothers, Terry (Tez) Roberts (vocals) and Tony (Bones) Roberts (guitar) Roy (Rainy) Wainright and a drummer called Acko (Tony Axon). The name itself was chosen due to it being obnoxious. Tanya Rich was their manager at this time, organizing their gigs. The first single, 'Realities of War' was released circa March 1980 and as Mike Stone did not have a distributor, he sold copies to shops of of the boot of his car. The single got into the top 10 of the Indie Chart in Sounds (a UK weekly music newspaper). This was followed by 'Fight Back', which again hit the Indie Charts.

Dropkick Murphys - Cathouse Glasgow 2000 (770mb = 41 min.)

Dropkick Murphys formed in 1996 in Boston, MA. The band was originally just a bunch of friends looking to play music for fun. We started playing in the basement of a friend's barbershop and our goal was to blend the musical influences we had grown up with (Punk Rock, Irish Folk, Rock, and Hardcore) into one loud, raucous, chaotic, and often out of tune mix that we could call our own. To our surprise people seemed to liked it and we began to record music and tour constantly.

Business - Live At Rio's - Suburban Rebels (661mb = 58 min.)

The Business formed in 1979, and went on to become one of the leading bands of the second wave of UK Punk Rock. The band were often seen as the leaders of the “OI” movement, closely associated with Punk. The original line-up went on to record several classic anthems, including “Suburban Rebels” and “Harry May”. A modified line-up then went on to further eighties notoriety with singles “Smash The Discos” and “Drinking And Driving”. After an extended break from recording and touring, the band’s current line-up came together in 1994, and is still going strong to the present day, playing to adoring fans all over the world. “Suburban Rebels – Live At Rio’s” features the band at their snarling live best, with a full show from their 1998 UK tour. All of their classic anthems are featured alongside many live favourites.

Disk 1: Suburban Rebels | The Whole Truth | Never Be Taken | Mortgage Mentality | Spirit Of The Street | Do They Owe Us A Living? | Saturday’s Heroes | Justice Not Politics | Out In The Cold | Blind Justice | Guttersnipe | Loud Proud & Punk | One Thing Left To Say | Real Enemy | Smash The Discos | Southgate (Euro ‘96) | Harry May | Drinking & Driving

DOA & Jello Biafra - Live in DNA Lounge SF 20.11.1990. (555mb = 29 min.)

Being from Canada, D.O.A. were unlikely poster boys for the punk movement that raged in San Francisco's North Beach district from the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's. But the band's fierce persona, radical political views, and spirit of protest could not be ignored. THE END captures their final concert ever--on November 20, 1990 at the famed DNA Lounge. With a special guest appearance by punk activist legend Jello Biafra, the performance ranks as one of the band's greatest.

Dickies - Live In Los Angeles 1983. (301mb = 31 min.)

The Dickies were amongst the first punk rock bands to emerge from Los Angeles, the first Californian punk band to appear on network television and the first Californian punk band to be signed to a major record label (instead of an independent label.)

The Dickies' style was campy and humorous with obvious influences from The Ramones (for whom they sometimes opened). They were popular in the UK, and had a Top 10 hit single with "Banana Splits (Tra La La Song)" in 1979. Many of their lyrics were about aspects of Southern California life not easily decipherable to those unfamiliar with the region, in songs like "Waterslide", "I'm A Chollo", "Manny, Moe and Jack", and "(I'm Stuck in a Pagoda with) Tricia Toyota", which is about a local TV news anchorwoman.

Drug problems slowed them down considerably in the 1980s, but they have continued playing and recording sporadically to the present day. In 1988 they wrote and performed the theme music for the movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

Bad Brains - Live Daytona Beach Us TV 1988. (241mb = 25 min.)

The Bad Brains are an exceptionally influential American all-black hardcore punk and reggae band, originally formed in Washington, D.C. in 1977. They are widely regarded as being among the pioneers of hardcore punk.

Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble, the Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound, which was both musically complex and more extreme than most of their punk rock contemporaries. The Bad Brains are one of the first American hardcore punk bands, commonly cited by many fans as the first hardcore band, though this is not surprisingly under persisting debate. They were also an adept reggae band, in a sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde arrangement, while later recordings featured elements of funk and heavy metal. The Bad Brains were also notable as religious Rastafarians.

The Bad Brains broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers and/or drummers. The group's classic lineup features singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bass guitarist Darryl Jennifer, and drummer Earl Hudson.

The Damned - Final Damnation (1988) DVD Rip (683mb = 71 min.)

The Damned, along with the Sex Pistols and The Clash, formed the vanguard of the early UK punk scene.

Recorded on 13 June 1988 at the Town and Country Club, London, this concert brings together the members of The Damned for a one-night-only performance. The first eight songs feature the original line-up of Dave Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (bass and lead guitar, and backup vocals), Brian James (lead guitar) and founding member Rat Scabies (drums). The last half of the set has Brian Merrick (guitar) and Roman Jugg (keyboards) mounting the stage for what seemed to be the gothic phase of The Damned's career, circa 1982.

Running for 71 minutes, the concert itself is indicative of the genre, with sloppy playing and high energy levels. Like Glen Danzig, Dave Vanian delivers his vocals with an annoying Elvis Presley twang. Captain Sensible – the clown of the band – enjoys insulting the audience between songs. His tedious banter threatens to drain the life out of the gig (the body language of his band mates suggests that they too have limited patience for his editorials). I suspect that the edits from one track to the next serve to abbreviate some of these detours. Also to this end, a review of the show is read by a mock radio announcer especially for the DVD between songs. This works well, except that the voice-over runs into parts of band playing.

Coverage of the band and the crowd is good, switching between wide angle shots, medium shots, and sweaty close-ups. The audience appears to enjoy the show: the whole mosh pit was thrashing about, not just the section near the stage. Of course, for a revival concert like this one, you would expect most of the punters to be rabid fans. Note that there are no end credits after the concert.

With a few caveats, Final Damnation is recommended to students of punk and certainly to "children of The Damned" itself. As far as punk goes, I personally prefer later bands like The Dwarves, The Dead Kennedys, The Exploited and Bad Religion. Watching Final Damnation provided a neat history lesson in the origins of the species.

English Dogs - Psycho Killer (Cherry Red Records) DVD RIP (799mb = 120 min.)

Formed in the early eighties, by drummer Pinch, the English Dogs, blazed onto the punk scene. They played their music hyper aggressive and ultra tight a sound that would become their signature. Their debut 12” “Mad Punx and English Dogs”, which was released in 1983 on the Mike Stone’s seminal punk label Clay Records, was praised by the critics and had success in the Indie chart. They quickly followed this a year later with the legendary classic “Invasion Of The Porky Men” LP, a record that would ensure them their status as icons in the punk world. They spearheaded the punk/metal crossover initiated by the cult guitar hero Gizz Butt, and became one of the most exhilarating bands on the scene both sides of the Atlantic, their name emblazed on the back of many a leather jacket!! By the late 90s Gizz had joined forces with The Prodigy and the English Dogs had reformed as Janus Stark. Regardless of the changes the English Dogs legacy lives on and continues to excite and inspire many young bands and punks today! Released for the first time on DVD these two gigs are taken from the legendary Barn End archive and show the Englsh Dogs at different stages of their metamorphosis into Janus Stark. The first was shot at Castle Rock, Edinburgh on the 13th August 1994, prior to Gizz joining The Prodigy when the band was a four piece. The Second was recorded at the much celebrate Holidays In The Sun Festival at Blackpool winter Gardens on 11th August 1996. Packed with hardcore riffing and adrenalin fuelled mayhem, we can only marvel at the shear sonic energy on display. The English Dogs may be no more, yet long may their legacy live on!

Peter And The Tset Tube Babies - Cattle & Bum | Live In Manchester(DVD Rip) (443mb = 45 min.)

The first ever DVD release from one of Punk's longest serving and popular bands, Peter And The Test Tube Babies. The Test Tubes have been releasing classic punk anthems since the late 1970's, and are still going strong to this day. The DVD features two unique presentations of the band. ''Cattle And Bum" is an entertaining and creative film, constructed by the band themselves. A testament to the humour and energy that the band generated over a decade, the film contains live footage old & new, promos, interviews and plenty of silliness. A classic. "Live In Manchester" features an 'as it happened' record of the band at their most uncouth. This archive performance includes much previously unseen footage, as the 'Test Tubes' hurtle recklessly through their repertoire. Many of the Test Tubes hits are featured on the DVD, with "Banned From The Pubs", "Run Like Hell", "Blown Out Again" and Moped Lads all at their raucous best. The band's back catalogue will be re-released this year, along with a brand new album. Sleeve notes on the DVD come from Test Tubes lead singer Peter.

Adicts - Let's Go (VHS Rip) (780MB = 41min.)

The Adicts are an English Punk rock band from Ipswich, Suffolk.

The Adicts began life as the Afterbirth & The Pinz, in their hometown of Ipswich in late 1975. Popular in the 1980s, they were often in the indie charts at that time.

They soon changed their name to The Adicts and became known for their distinctive Clockwork Orange 'Droog' image, which, along with their urgent, uptempo music and light-hearted lyrics, helped set them very much apart from the rest of the genre. Temporary 1980s name changes to 'Fun Adicts' and 'ADX', mainly to coincide with children's TV appearances, also occurred.

Their song "Viva La Revolution" was featured in the video game Tony Hawk's Underground.

The band still has all its original members, uncommon for a band with such longevity.

Angelic Upstarts - Play At Home Documentary 1984 (451mb = 46min.)

The Angelic Upstarts were formed in South Shields, North-East England in mid 1977. Influenced by bands such as The Clash and The Sex Pistols, they were a meeting of working class ideology and musical aspiration. Mensi was always liable to provoke reaction, his lyrics making much of his working class roots, and lashing out at police and politicians. When they weren't kicking a pigs head around onstage Northumbria's finest were knocking out class songs like their debut Murder of Liddle Towers and others like Student Power and I'm An Upstart
The original line up consisted of Mensi - Thomas Mensforth (vocals), Mond (Ray Cowie) (guitar), Steve Forsten (bass) and Decca Wade (drums).

Buzzcocks - Live In The Markthalle, Humburg, Germany, Janyary 1981 (573mb = 57 min.)

The band was formed by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto soon after they had met and travelled to London together to see the Sex Pistols in February 1976. Shelley and Devoto were impressed by what they saw and arranged for the Sex Pistols to come and perform at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, in June 1976. Buzzcocks intended to play at this concert but were unable to do so as they lacked a bassist and a drummer. Once they had recruited Steve Diggle and John Maher, they made their debut opening for the Sex Pistols' second Manchester gig in July 1976.

Black Flag - Live 1984 (DVD Rip, 698mb = 57min.)

Black Flag was a hardcore punk band formed in 1976 in southern California, largely as the brainchild of Greg Ginn, the guitarist, primary songwriter and sole continuous member through multiple personnel changes.

Black Flag forged a unique sound early on that mixed the raw simplicity of the Ramones with atonal and microtonal guitar solos and frequent tempo shifts. Over this could be heard lyrics—mostly written by Ginn—about isolation, neurosis and paranoia, themes which did not disappear when Henry Rollins took on the role of lead singer in 1981. Most of the band's material was released on Ginn's independent label, SST Records.

Black Flag were (and remain) well respected among their underground culture, with their influence primarily in their tireless promotion of a self-controlled DIY ethic and aesthetic. They're often regarded as pioneers in the movement of underground do-it-yourself record labels that flourished among the 1980s' punk rock bands. Through seemingly-constant touring throughout the United States and Canada, and occasionally Europe, Black Flag established an extremely dedicated fan base. Many other musicians would follow Black Flag's lead and book their own tours, utilizing a word-of-mouth network.

Over the course of the 1980s, Black Flag's sound, as well as their notoriety, evolved in ways that alienated much of their early punk audience. They were part of the first wave of American West Coast punk rock, are considered a key influence on the punk subculture, and are especially important in the creation of hardcore punk. Along with being among the earliest punk rock groups to incorporate elements of heavy metal (particularly in their later records), there were often overt jazz (mainly free jazz) and contemporary classical elements in their sound, especially in Ginn's guitar playing, and the band interspersed records and performances with instrumentals throughout their career. They also played longer, slower, and more complex songs at a time when many bands in their milieu stuck to a raw, fast, three-chord format. As a result, Black Flag's extensive discography is more varied than many of their punk-rock contemporaries.
